I’m not one of those people who blames Mike Garrison for running off Rich Rodriguez. Maybe he did — I just don’t know. Although it did look like Garrison handled the situation in the same meatheaded way he handled the Bresch affair. But the decision to Hire Bill Stewart as head coach falls squarely on Mike Garrison. Take Heather Bresch out of the equation and it was the only big decision Garrison ever made.
And please, can we quit pretending and admit what this was? It was complete foolishness. WVU was in a position to hire a really great coach. Instead, we hired a sweet old clown whose previous accomplishments as a head coach included losing 25 games in three years before resigning after calling a player the N-word. Yes, the Fiesta Bowl sure was something, but it was won with Rodriguez’s players, with Rodriguez’s coaches calling Rodriguez’s plays. Get real.
Garrison gave less though to the decision to hire Stewart that Miss Britney Jean Spears gave to her first marriage. But the thing is, it’s exactly what you’d expect from a professional lobbyist. It wasn’t just a political decision — it was a purely short-term political decision. Anyone with a half a brain could see that Stewart was going to be a loser in the long run, and consequently would be a political liability in a year or two. But a lobbyist focuses on the next vote. Mike went for the cheap, instant political gratification of hiring Coach Stew. It’s precisely the type of prediction people made when Garrison was hired.
Maybe Rich Rodriguez is an egomaniacal prick who would have never been happy at WVU — maybe not. But he was a damn good football coach. Now we have a clown at the helm.
Thanks, Mike.

Don’t forget sideline Joe and his influence.
ECU is a good team, maybe this post was premature (but I doubt It). They finally have a schedule that would put them in the running if they won out. We’ll see what happens in Colorado, but my guess is they’ll be sucking air.
September 7, 2008 at 9:31 pm
It may be a little early to start bashing the coach but I suspect you’re writing what a lot of people are thinking. Not the clown part…that’s pretty mean. He seems to be a nice guy. But it was an emotional decision, like so many that MG made. Who makes a hiring decision at 2 a.m. after a night of partying? According to ESPN, Skip Holtz was supposed to fly out the next day to interview for the position. Ironic, isn’t it.
At least Stewart didn’t hold the athletic department up with huge demands.
I hope you’re wrong but somehow I don’t think so.
September 7, 2008 at 10:00 pm
It is possible that they’ll lose to Colorado, Auburn, and possibly Conneticut or Rutgers before the election.
I wonder if JOE will feel the heat because of his tampering if the Mountaineers are on .500 going into the election?
Silly me, West Virgininians wouldn’t bring football into politics (naw, that couldn’t be worst than getting his daughter a degree).
September 7, 2008 at 10:41 pm
Ironic that Garrison’s backers sold him as a real-world, business-minded decision maker instead of some airy fairy egghead academic. The Stewart decision was about as amateurish and incompetent as it possibly could have been.
Stewart may well manage to eke out a decent season. After all, he still has Rod’s players. But long-run, he’s going to set back the program by a decade. He seems to mean well, but he’s totally out of his depth.
September 7, 2008 at 11:07 pm
The governor is as much to blame as Mike Garrison. God forbid we lose to Marshall.

Heather, is that you?

OMG, HK what the heck are you talking about……..lose one game and you’re ready to condemn the guy,be real……………dont you remember when Rodriguez started, very rocky start……..people were worried that this “new fangled run and gun just isnt our smash mouth kind of football”………and it turned out in the long run to be ok………..dont tell me you are one of those “what have you done for me this minute type of guys?”…..i thought you were more insightful……but you are correct,MK went with the “sentimental favorite”,and got us this……..its the WVU way…………aske Fred

It looked as if the ghost of Ryan Leaf came to life at the WVU v. ECU game on Saturday. What a complete disaster. I don’t know how much Coach Stewart is to blame, though. But I do agree the coaching search–like so many other “searches” at WVU–was conducted improperly. Still, I remain hopeful that the football team can turn it around.
At least I can cheer for whichever team is playing against Michigan and revel in a Wolverine loss. I sincerely doubt that the Michigan faithful will be as accepting of a two-year grace period to turn the program around, especially after shelling out $2.5 million for the buyout. From what I’ve read in the Michigan press, Coach Rodriguez has already caused unnecessary friction in Ann Harbor.
September 8, 2008 at 10:26 am
It amazes me that HK would call anyone a clown. I enjoy this blog because I find the rantings of a deluded substitute school teacher to provide an endless stream of laughs.
Within a year Mike Garrison, despite his faults and ill fated decisions, will be a more productive member of society than the self-appointed arbiter of truth than you know who.
Time could prove that Stew is in over his head. But that doesn’t make him a clown. HK is not even worthy to kiss Stew’s butt.
PS: Hey HK! You forgot to use the F-word. I guess you can’t even live up to your own standards.
September 8, 2008 at 10:46 am
And Fred, what is it that you do to be a productive member of society?
September 8, 2008 at 11:09 am
Maybe Terry Bowden will come and save you.
September 8, 2008 at 11:34 am
FUCKING RIDICULOUS!!!
ECU does have a good team this year, but Bill Stewart is NOT head coach material. If all the administration wanted was a puppet, they definitely got their wish. Again, THANK MIKE! (NOT!)
September 8, 2008 at 12:12 pm
I am afraid that our players will not be able to recover form this debacle. This season will quickly turn into a failure if we do not turn it around against Colorado. The true coaching colors of Stewart and company will be shown in our upcoming game…
September 8, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Fred,
Original thinkers must get you all excited.
Your gratuitous condescension leads me to believe you might be an unemployed Republican who fantasizes about Sarah Palin’s shelf when you’re sure that nobody can see when your eyes go all kaleidoscopic.

I am not ready to throw coach stewart under the bus yet, but even at this early stage in his career as head coach it is obvious that his hiring was a mistake. Perhaps he will turn out to be a good coach for us, but the decision, at the time it was made, was a bad one.
The problem is the over-politicization of WVU, and the coach hiring situation is a microcosm of the bigger problem, which can be felt all over the university.
A friend of mine who works in the athletic director’s office told him that AD Ed Pastilong wanted to wait a few days to decide who to hire, knowing there were other interviews coming up and that everyone was pretty emotional at 3 am after the bowl win. Of course, when Pastilong’s old buddy Joe Manchin wants to hire the guy, and Garrison got on board, Pastilong had to think about his job instead of what was best for the football team. He knew Garrison was just waiting for a chance to get rid of him so he could get one of his Cronies in there as athletic director… so Eddie P played ball.
Makes you wonder how many decisions were influenced by Garrison on the academic side.
September 8, 2008 at 1:36 pm
demosthenes.or.locke “Makes you wonder how many decisions were influenced by Garrison on the academic side.”
Well, the Bresch case for one, and quite likely the Dean of Medicine for another. But, carrying what you said earlier, you could also substitute Manchin for Garrison with that question. Was he just a sock puppet?
September 8, 2008 at 2:16 pm
isnt FRED,Fred Butcher?
September 8, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Garrison said at one point after RR left that he wanted WVU to focus more on academics than on football (a few days after the departure, and after he lay low while Joe gave statements to media). I thought that the Stewart hiring, at a deeply discounted rate, fit with that stated aim.
September 8, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Premature guys…ECU is real good, they ran all over Va Tech. If not for the their turnovers, that game would not have been in doubt. ECU should have been ranked after that game, then WVU loses to a ranked team.
Don’t jump off the bandwagon yet, WVU has a young defense and it’s only the 2nd week. Two turnovers on the road makes it hard for anyone to win
September 8, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Don’t be too harsh on Mike Garrison on this one.
While I am certainly NOT a Garrison fan [glad to see him go!], please remember the long and sticky tentacles that Joe Manchin has.
Manchin micromanages many many things from Charleston.
This decision was Manchin’s, pure and simple.
Remember to VOTE!!!
September 8, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Observer “Garrison said at one point after RR left that he wanted WVU to focus more on academics than on football”
Then why did he sign Huggins to a life time deal at the height of the Bresch scandal to try to deflect criticism? Honestly. such a statement would have just been “words” to Garrison since he had no idea about academics.
On the other hand, I could easily be convinced that Manchin had a hand in both the Rod/Stew adventure and the Huggins attempt at deflection. It was another case where the Athletic Department didn’t seem informed about what was happening.
September 8, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Sorry, but I don’t see Manchin’s fingerprints on this one. The Stewart hire was far too amateurish for him.
The Huggins hire had been in the works for years — that was more Steve Farmer than anyone else.
Stewart is a Mike Garrison production, pure and simple.
September 8, 2008 at 5:30 pm
horse always makes a lot of sense to me. Is that horse sense? HK’s track record is better than Stews at this point, too. Stew has his chances and we’ll see. His record won’t be make or break from a blog, but by his own performance.
September 8, 2008 at 7:40 pm
The Huggins signing was a distraction. No way to know whether Mike meant what he said about academics, or whether it was a throwaway remark meant to curry favor with the faculty who would rather have money expended on academics, and totally meaningless. Stew seems very lovable and I hope he can prove the naysayers wrong.
September 8, 2008 at 8:10 pm
I love this column.
I read it every day.
Thanks all for the thoughtful comments.
September 8, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Rodriquez was a great coach once he had Pat White and the rest of the team that was here the last few years. WVU lost 8 starters on defense and their best returning starter is hurt. On the offense we lost several lineman as well as the best fullback in the nation who could run, block and catch (punting is another issue). Was Stewart a great hire? Who knows. Please stop bringing up his record at VMI, no one has one at that school. I doubt if Pete Carrol, Jim Tressell or Knute Rockne could win at that school.
September 9, 2008 at 12:16 am
Everyone whispers that the governor was pulling the strings. Who knows? What we do know is that Garrison was the president of the university and at the end of the day, he was the one who made the call to hire a guy who’d never won as a head coach and never given anyone a reason to think he might.
September 9, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Did anyone stop to think that perhaps Rod was happy to leave when he did, because he knew WVU was not going to have the players this year?
September 9, 2008 at 1:45 pm
“Please stop bringing up his record at VMI, no one has one at that school.”
Wrong. And he is ranked 24th at VMI in terms of winning percentage.
September 9, 2008 at 7:25 pm
me Says: VMI was a powerhouse when? Not in recent times.
September 9, 2008 at 10:27 pm
I think the point was that even among the losing coaches at a losing school like VMI, Stewart’s record was pretty awful.
September 10, 2008 at 4:56 pm
It was real smart getting coach Stew. He’s from the great state of WV and he knows how to keep those n—–s in line. Recruiting should be great next year. yeee haaaw
