  1. WVU Alumni 2008 Says:

Simply amazing, HK. I nominate you for a Pulitizer. Did you have it leaked to you, or did you have to FOIA?

  2. Hippie Killer Says:

It was right there on the web. It just took me a while to find it. Someone posted the link here.

  3. Steph Says:

OK – what have we not checked with O/C tenacity? Handwriting analysis!!

  4. i care Says:

    handwriting analysis…….EGO……….

  5. anonymous Says:

Apparently expectations of him weren’t very high there either. It’s priceless to see:

    Legislative lobbying – check
    Administrative lobbying – check
Retained to lobby in addition to performing other services – check

    And the kicker:
If compensated, is any portion of that compensation contingent on success of that lobbying activity?
    Yes – blank
    No – blank
    Not applicable – check

Well that’s some important lobbying he must have been doing if it’s not even worth a “No”. Those “other services” must have been incredibly valuable. Garrison must have been putting the “relations” in “General Government Relations” for his lobbying performance not to matter one bit. A damn ugly gigolo/fluffer if you ask me. Joe must keep the lights dimmed.

  6. Josh Flowers Says:

You should post the lobbyist document showing Mike Garrison registering as a lobbyist, then using Centra Bank’s luxury box at the WVU stadium to entertain Joe and Gail Manchin.

  7. WVU Alumni 2008 Says:

Mike Garrison had his fingers in a lot of pies as a lobbyist. Here is the list:

    705-Five Development Group, LLC
    Alliance Resource Partners, L.P.
Boys & Girls Clubs of America Inc.
    Branch Banking & Trust
    Bruceton Bank

Starting to put the picture together. Are we not?

At that site notice the two addresses he used. 990 Elmer Prince Drive (centra bank building by WVUH) and 150 Clay Street, which is Petropolis’ building Waterfront Placenear

  9. Kevin Patrick Says:

I would like to suggest, since HK is doing an amazing job on this facet, that we use the 5thC as the theoretical, information center and use my posts at GarrisonMustGo as a forum for co-ordinating the action-arm of these issues. There we can plan events, and such things. Let me know what you think.

  10. Kevin Patrick Says:

By the way, well done HK on getting this information out. We owe you one.

  11. Steph Says:

Whoo – Hoo WVU Alumni 2008!

At this point, we may have to turn the entire governance of higher ed in WV over to . . . another state? another country?

  12. Mark PGH Says:

HK….I also saw that website a week or so ago. I didn’t mention it here as I figured you had already seen it too. Lots of interesting documents on that site.

  13. David Mitchell Says:

Joshua- Great letter to the editor in the DP this morning. I will reply to your email later. David Mitchell

PS – My cousin’s husband (the Mayor of your home town) says hello!

  15. Left Shadow Says:

Nice work HK. Who is going to be the first to call princess Heather?

I think she’s kinda hot in the unethical, cheating, lying, deceitful, dishonest, false, fibbing, fraudulent, misleading, treacherous, untruthful, evil, spoiled bitch category. She gets my ten.

  16. azlo Says:

    Does the PPG have these?

  17. azlo Says:

I guess it does now. As always good job HK.

  18. poliscigeek Says:

This all stinks to high heaven. With all of the background, history and incestuous relationships, we are somehow to believe that he, Mike Garrison, was not involved in exerting influence in granting the degree. HIS PROXIES WERE IN THE ROOM AND PARTICIPATED!!!!! How much more does one need to know – is the entire BOG that inept? Perhaps someone should clue them in that perception is reality, regardless of what they may or may not believe to be the facts!

  19. Steph Says:

We have proxies of proxies of proxies of proxies. MG sure was a weak link.

  20. in_the_dark Says:

HK, you are absolutely amazing! Keep up the good work!

  21. poliscigeek Says:

That’s for sure Steph, and no one taking any responsibility, really, not even the Admins who resigned, but kept their teaching positions and fat salaries. They all point to the other. If the lobbyist registration form has no impact, I am not sure what will. One has to wonder if there is not another agenda as far as the BOG, Mojo, WVU and Mike Garrison are concerned — what else is going on in the background? Otherwise, why would they be so adamant about backing up a President who has presided over what may be one of the worst scandals a university has seen in recent times? Think about it.

  22. LaReina Says:

Hey now, who wouldn’t look at that and immediately think, “Now THERE’S a proper president for a major research university”?

Pardon me while I puke my guts out.

  23. Hippie Killer Says:

    Thanks, all.

If you’ve liked what you’ve read over the past few weeks, consider hitting the donate button. This shit doesn’t write itself.

  24. anon Says:

    “This shit doesn’t write itself.”

It kinda does, actually. I mean, you couldn’t make it up.

  25. Hippie Killer Says:

    LOL!

  26. Donations on the Way Says:

I’m going to buy a subscription to the PPG and donate to you the amount I used to pay for my local paper.

  27. WVU Alumni 2008 Says:

So, I went through Garrison’s log of appointments. To my surprise, my name was blacked out when I had a meeting with him on November 30, 2007.

    The document is very interesting.

  28. Aged Wolverine Says:

    HK and gang

Good to see you guys are hard at work as usual.

Just wanted to give a “Keep those heads high” guys :)

Hopefully will be feeling better soon, so I can take part in blog once again.

    Take care all

  29. Aged Wolverine Says:

    Actually Anon…

You could make it up…it is just that CSI, Murder She Wrote, Blues Clues etc doesnt hold a candle to What has transpired in WVa/WVU.

Maybe a few episodes of the X-Files…but it would be closer than the experts think.

ON that note I am out of here…check ya good folks out soon

  30. poliscigeek Says:

Where is Mike Puskar on all this? He was pretty vocal in support of Heather before the Panel released its report. But we have heard nothing from him since except by proxy (there’s that word again) when CEO Coury said that the Board and Management of Mylan stand behind her and consider the case closed, no action to be taken.

  31. Also An Alum Says:

    HK you da bomb!

  32. poster Says:

On page 19 of the file http://www.fretna.org/wvu/garrison_0506.pdf, Garrison failed to check only one. He signed his name to a form which claims he was:

retained solely as a lobbyist, and
retained to lobby in addition to other services

Probably not a big deal, as it was just Boys & Girls Clubs of America, but good for a chuckle.

  33. Snarky Says:

According to a November 29, 2007, Inside WVU: “WVU Staff Council Classified Staff Welfare Committee completed a Healthy Work Environment (anti-bullying) Initiative Proposal and presented it to the council and WVU President Mike Garrison.”

I was told that staff who proposed the initiative wanted a national firm that specializes in bullying to review WVU (for a reasonable fee). Apparently, MG agreed to the anti-bullying proposal but wanted an in-house investigation.

I wonder what happened with that, especially given the current level of fear at the university?

  34. WVCouch Says:

When he gets out of a pool, how big is the slick Garrison leaves behind?

  35. Hippie Killer Says:

Sorry about all the comments that went into the spam folder today — especially the pro-Garrison ones. I fished a few of them out.

FYI, they’re usually from people in the Clarksburg / Fairmont area, and they’re almost always from people who think that WVU is a sports program that runs a research and teaching thing on the side.

  36. Snarky Says:

Being a WVCouch, I suppose you’re looking for enough slick to set a fire.

I saw a student wearing a tee shirt one day that said: “WVU: Where greatness is learned and couches are burned.”

  37. Cobb Says:

Time and again, this proves itself the only legitimate media outlet in West Virginia on this issue. I never imagined myself giving money to a blog, but I’ll say this: I give money to public radio every year, and you’ve done the public in WV a whole helluva lot more good than public radio ever has. Keep up the good work, and please keep shining a light on issues like this even after the current furor passes.

  38. garrisonmustgo Says:

You can read HoD candidate Harry Bertram’s answer to my email that I previously mentioned HERE.

  39. Mark PGH Says:

While I am pleased with Mr. Bertram’s responses to your email, I must say that some of the platforms upon which he stands are a cause for concern, in my opinion. Check out this page from his website:

    http://bertram08.com/pages/issues.html

  40. Mark PGH Says:

Bertram seems to be a bit too much of a right-winger for many people’s tastes.

  41. Hippie Killer Says:

    From his website:

His first presidential campaign was in helping George Wallace run for president.

What makes you think people will have a problem with that?

    :-)

  42. Mark PGH Says:

    ROFLMAO!

  43. Snarky Says:

Snicker, HK. :) True. True. Just because we like a person’s response on one issue doesn’t necessarily mean we want to vote for him.

  44. Mark PGH Says:

Here’s a copy of letters written to the BOG and Gov. Manchin from a WVU alum:

    http://www.getelephantwars.com/repubgazette5-23-08manchintargetofoutragedavisletter.html

  45. Hippie Killer Says:

By all means though, I’m totally for protest votes. Make the incumbent WORK for their seat.

  46. garrisonmustgo Says:

Like I said on GMG, I am not by any means endorsing him. His stance on a lot of issues are way off from mine.

I also got a response from Bob Beach today. If you can call riding the fence a response. I have given him another chance to take a stance, then I will post his reply for you all to see.

  47. Hippie Killer Says:

    Bob Beach. There’s another joke.

Do you really think all of this would have went down the way it did if Morgantown didn’t consistently send the most inept delegation in West Virginia to the Statehouse year after year?

    I don’t.

  48. Steph Says:

We Monongalians apologize! It’s the slavery clause built into our contracts!

  49. PG Reader Says:

Interesting factoid – it’s not just the B&E being audited. And everyone’s favorite Assistant Vice President is apparently personally doing the auditing.

  50. Molly's Mom Says:

What’s the scoop on that PG Reader???

HK, what can you tell us about lobbying? Is that all that is required, a couple of photos and a few bucks? It sure yields big returns…

  51. WhooHoo Says:

Here’s the presidential bios from some other Big East schools:

    http://www.chancellor.pitt.edu/profile.html
    http://louisville.edu/president/biography/
    http://www.uconn.edu/administration/president.php
    http://www.president.rutgers.edu/about.shtml
    http://president.georgetown.edu/biography.html

I wonder if the other Big East presidents say to themselves, “Who the f”’ is this guy?” whenever they meet Garrison. The contrast between their backgrounds and MG’s speak volumes. I don’t understand how the BOG could even think Garrison was a legitimate choice?

  52. Hippie Killer Says:

They didn’t think he was legit. That’s why they rigged the search for him.

If Mike Garrison had applied for a job at any of those schools, he wouldn’t get an interview. They’d look at his resume and laugh.

  53. Anonymous Says:

No one needs to vote for Ron Justice for mayor again, that’s for sure.

  54. WVU Alumni 2008 Says:

HK: You should submit your resume for WVU president. Remember the 11 year old that applied for WVU head football coach? I bet they would give you a fair shake.

  55. recentgrad Says:

    PG said:

“Interesting factoid – it’s not just the B&E being audited. And everyone’s favorite Assistant Vice President is apparently personally doing the auditing.”

I finshed a grad degree this year, passed my defense and submitted my thesis to ETS, and yet I got an email from this guy’s office telling me I hadn’t registered for fall classes yet, and that I ought to do so immediately.

Of course I completed all my coursework (and earned 4.0 in actual, real classes!) and made sure to dot all the i’s and cross all the t’s, so I can see where the VP of Graduate Education would be confused.

My question is (rhetorical of course), why is this guy auditing records when his own office can’t seem to tell when a grad student is graduating?

Actually, I have a lot more questions. And not enough Advil.

  56. Bull Put Says:

    Question:

Why would the Manchin and the BOG hand-pick their lobbyist to be the president of WVU?!?

Obviously, one would only need to follow the money.

But how is it that Garrison could, as president of WVU, line Manchin and/or Mylan and/or Centra and/or certain BOG member’s pockets with money?

The connections between the various interested parties are now clear. But, I wonder, what’s in it for his backers to have Garrison in Stewart Hall?

  57. Undercover Says:

One possibility – WVU owns a lot of land around Morgantown that might be of interest to certain developers, either to buy outright in a rigged deal, or to get contracts for buildings.

Many have rumored that the WVU presidency is a stepping stone to state governor for Garrison. As Governor he could do LOTS for his cronies on the Board. This makes sense because he would gain state-wide name recognition that he could never get as a lobbyist, without the hassle of running for minor offices like state representative then state senator.

  58. Steph Says:

Without knowing anyone’s opinion about the history of journalism on this site, I share the post of today. It’s called “The Smoking Gun” but you heard it here first, folks, thanks to HK

    http://www.huntingtonnews.net/editor/080604-ed.html

  59. observer71 Says:

What’s in it for Mylan? Property now occupied by WVNet worth about 6 mil.

  60. Steven Adams Says:

There is laughter tonight from my desk in Parkersburg. This is beautiful.

  61. 2282 Says:

Anonymous at 7:07, Justice is elected mayor by city council, so the postition is ceremonial more than anything else.

FYI, SGA VP Napier declined his summer job at Stewart Hall in protest of what has been going on.

  62. WVU Employee Says:

Steph, I’m confused. Is this statement from Logar new? It looks pretty obvious to me that Macia pressured those at the meeting to agree to giving Heather Manchin Bresch the degree.

  63. David Mitchell Says:

Interesting letter to BOG with xc to Governor Manchin from another WVU graduate and former VP and Officer at John Deere – http://www.getelephantwars.com/repubgazette5-23-08manchintargetofoutragedavisletter.html A month old and very direct but it shows that Kalis et al are not the only alumni weighing in on this matter.

  64. Undercover Says:

And Craig Walker sat there silently twiddling his thumbs? If Garrison had fired Walker and Macia as well as demoted Lang and Sears, he might have had an ounce of credibility. But the chance to appear credible is long past. The Manchin gang put a great lobbyist in a job where he’s done nothing but demonstrate incompetence.

  65. PG Reader Says:

@Molly’s Mom – it appears that Jonathan Cumming is personally conducting audits regarding graduate records. Don’t have any more info than that, but the concept of an assistant vice president personally auditing and questioning is very interesting.

  66. been silent so far Says:

I’m new here. I’ve been reading a while, but I feel it important to post now.

Undercover: your comment about developers is important. A few months ago the Monongalia County Service Fee was a hot issue. Most of the support for its passage in a local special election (which failed 4-1) came from Mylan, local banks (including Centra) and local developers.

What many people don’t realize is that two county commissioners, Ron Justice (WVU employee and Morgantown mayor, now circulating his petition behind Mikey G), and Mike Garrison himself (and a whole bunch of others – including CofC leadership) were major factors in the development of service fee legislation and developing a public campaign. The fee itself was designed to externalize many infrastructure costs to developers and to encourage more, not to alleviate traffic as was advertised. And who comes on board to push for its passage? Big King Joe.

With the exception of one major figure, it looks like the same forces that drove the pro-service fee campaign are behind MG, the BoG, and Manchin. More noteworthy is the other side, though. 80% of the vote in Mon Co came out against the fee. The current scandal is on a larger scale, but the same portion of the population is still opposed. But now it isn’t an isolated instance of people being able to cast their opinion against a localized circumstance of the cronyism and oligarchy of WV. Now it’s everywhere in WV. People are ready for change – they are ready for the same back-room political alliances and corporate greed to end.

I think a study should be done in this area. Draw connections to other political activity. It’s not about HB any more.

  67. Joe P Says:

Bertram is not right-wing. He is a white supremacist. He was disavowed by the State GOP in 04 and 06. I am a Republican, but I hope Betram gets no votes whatsoever in Nov.

  68. PG Reader Says:

RE: Bertram, At least in 04ish he was putting out his own little newspaper IIRC. Joe P is right. Whatever disgust you have with the Mon County delegation, Bertram is not the answer. Stay the heck away from him.

  69. garrisonmustgo Says:

Check out page 14 of this PDF file, and you will see none other than Leah Summers signature on his 2007- 2008 Mylan lobbyist registration form. I believe that she is the one who claims to have been in the room with the princess and Paul Speaker during the infamous meeting that took place in 1998.

  70. garrisonmustgo Says:

Also, Mikey lobbied for the other Morgantown Real Estate barrons, the Biafora’s, Metro Rentals, wonder if their name is on that petition?

AND he lobbied for the Morgantown Chamber of Commerce. That clears up a little on who the original 500 Morgantown business leaders who signed the petition are, huh?

  71. horse Says:

Notice that those are the termination forms for lobbying, signed a week after his selection. So, he was lobbying for Mylan right through the whole selection process. Kind of makes his stepping down from the HEPC when he was named a finalist seem magnanimous doesn’t it. He never exhibit much integrity.

  72. Mark PGH Says:

An eloquent letter from a former law firm colleague of Mike Garrison’s:

    http://www.huntingtonnews.net/letters/080604-brown-openlettertotheeditor.html

  73. 2282 Says:

Yes, the service fee was also heavily pushed by the assholes called the Warners, mainly so that the 705 connector would be there for when they start building their behemoth of a mall near downtown, which of course is partially funded by state money.

  74. azlo Says:

GMG: while that in most cases page 14 would be a SHOCKING revelation, at this point eh? i have come to expect it.

  75. poliscigeek Says:

So Macia was sent to “give the order” and Walker to ensure it was carried out. It all makes sense to me and directly implicates Garrison. Proxies do not act without the full knowledge of the one for whom they are proxies. And if that is not the case, then Garrison must still go because Macia and Walker acting on their own suggests Garrison has no control over his staff as they would have been running amok. Seems the BOG has no choice but to join the faculty in a vote of no confidence if they choose to do what is right for WVU, the citizens of WV who pay for the university and the students who have earned and will earn degrees there.

  76. Mark PGH Says:

poliscigeek…..”Seems the BOG has no choice but to join the faculty in a vote of no confidence if they choose to do what is right”

    A HUGE ASSUMPTION.

I hope you’re right, but as they say, stranger things have happened…..and in this case, over and over again.

They have had the choice to do what is right many times and have not done so. What makes you think they will do the right thing this time?

These people are drunk with power to the point that they do not see or care what is right.

That is why we cannot let up until “what is right” has prevailed.

  77. azlo Says:

WV press is a bit late on this one but better late than never. As I was hoping after Friday’s smoke screen, the press has gone too far in demanding MG must go to turn around now. They need to keep going and to me that is a good thing.

  78. azlo Says:

want to talk about “palpable pressure”, that is what will be felt around campus and possibly the entire state on June 6 if the BOG gives MG a full vote of confidence.

  79. Abbie Hoffman Says:

Anyone planning on protesting/demonstrating at Friday’s BOG meeting at the Embassy Suites? Seems like a good opportunity to vent our frustrations. Ideas?

  80. Jim Says:

This pertains to the form signed by both Mr. Garrison and Heather Bresch

Question # 4. The form called for Mr. Garrison to check one:

    1. Retained solely as a lobbyist
    2. Unpaid volunteer
    3. Retained to lobby in addition to performing other services

Mr. Garrison checked box no. 3.

Question # 5. If compensated, is any portion of that compensation contingent upon the success of that lobbying activity?

Mr. Garrison checked the “not applicable” box.

The “not applicable” box is not an option for someone who checks the box “Retained to lobby in addition to perform other services.” Yes or no must be checked.

Because Mr. Garrison was compensated, he was required to check “yes” or “no,” NOT “not applicable.”

“Not applicable” is only an option if you are an unpaid volunteer.

Mr. Garrison also certified, to his knowledge, that this was true and accurate and that he understood that it was a “violation of WV Code 6B-3-9 to willfully and knowingly file a false or incomplete report.”

Who would say that Mr. Garrison violated WV Code 6B-3-9?

  81. Mark PGH Says:

I think if the BOG punts on this issue and gives MG carte blanche to stay on at WVU on Friday, consideration has to be given to commencing formal legal action including the demand for the convening of a grand jury. I’m not an attorney, but I would think there may have been either state or federal laws that may have been broken.

  82. WVU Techie Says:

In most places, that Page 14 revelation would probably be enough to give Mikey the boot. For the BoG, though, I think Moses would have to come down the mountain with some more stone tablets and I’m not sure even that would be enough.

While it doesn’t really help advance our goal, there is one heartening thing to consider with all of these conflicts of interest. Garrison evidently has no friends. Pretty much everyone who has spoke out in support of Garrison has some demonstrable personal or financial interest in seeing that Garrison stays in power.

  83. Hippie Killer Says:

    Nice try Jim, but no.

  84. Mark PGH Says:

    Techie…..excellent observation.

The man is nothing but a sociopath.

  85. Mountaineer Says:

Great letter above from Rick Brown, and he resigned from the Law School Visiting Committee in protest. Will others follow? Will the silence from the law school end?

  86. Mark PGH Says:

I think the noise is going to only get louder until justice has been served and WVU is rid of Garrison and, hopefully, the woeful excuse for a Board of Governors.

Nothing less than a total housecleaning is in order.

  87. azlo Says:

Trying to keep with the theme. What a muddled mess.

    http://www.post-gazette.com/images4/20080609WVU_board_governors.pdf

  88. bingmanch Says:

The thing about that latest ppg article is, at least one of the members (not appointed by Mojo or Wise), is from WVU-Parkersburg, which, is not going to be affiliated with WVU after July 1.

So, that non-manchin appointed vote is gone after that day. Then, manchin will have 9 of 17. A majority.

  89. Mark PGH Says:

Does anybody know whatever happened to the PPG request for MG’s phone records? I think their was a problem with producing his land-line records, but what about his cell phone records? For that matter, what about Macia’s cell phone records? Or Heather Bresch’s? Or Joe Manchin’s?

A U.S. Attorney could make that happen.

  90. westworld Says:

come on, this is old news. i was with you guys until you started talking about throwing pulitzers and money at someone for hitting copy, paste, and hyperlink. save the congrats and backslapping for the victory party. and save the money for gas

  91. Steph Says:

    WVU Employee @8:45pm

I posted a new report, that’s all. No, it is not news to anyone who read the interviews 6 weeks ago. But many people will not read things like that – face it – critical thinking is required, and wading through a lot of “stuff.”

Many people also rely on the press to interpret it all for them, unfortunately. At least it finally was done for that segment of the population this time around. Simple language, black and white – everyone wants that but it’s often a lot of work for some.

  92. Steph Says:

    WVU Employee:

I also meant that HK & Co. has been on top of this for a very long time – not that anyone head this first from my post or from HNN.

Now it’s time to post half the Dominion Post for the day.

  93. Steph Says:

About the property owner’s interests and politics in Mon County:

Thanks for pointing that out. At the time, I think the proposal was voted down on the single premise that it was costing – what – $80K ? – to hold a special election JUST for that one item, when it could have waited until the WV Primary.

Just proves that money talks, and money as the main issue makes sense. This one happened to hit home.

Time to go to work – tell me to stop if this posting is too annoying.

Let’s hope the “brain trust” of MIR can hold together to see this through for WVU.

  100. wvuhscex Says:

i just read that “eloquent letter from MG exlaw firm partner”,and cant help but thinking WHY does this putz continue in his job as prez?……a very distinguished attorney doesnt waste his time publicly writing such an article in an open forum…………..come on Garrison wake up and do the right thing…..LEAVE,before you shut ALL your future doors…….

  101. Andrew Sabak Says:

    Thanks, Steph at 4:30 a.m.!

That’s my daughter here in Fairmont! She wrote the letter on her own initiative, since she could see how concerned her parents are (we attended the Monday student forum, and I went to several MIR meetings). She attended the WV Writers’ Workshop last summer at WVU, with Mark Brazaitis, and we were very pleased to see him taking a leadership role.

We take great pride here in Fairmont being the home town or residence of many famous people (Pierpont, Neely, Mollohan, Retton, Saban, Rodriguez, Johnny Johnson, Manchin x 10, Bresch, Garrison, et al.)

  102. Lurking In The Grass Says:

Take note on the registration form:

    990 Elmer Primce Drive

That is the address for the main Centra Bank Building in Suncrest

MG’s well documented list of past clients represent more “confilicts of interest” than annotated above.

Take for example the 705 Development Group – recieved a real sweetheart deal on the “big dig”. and several other land transfers from WVU as well. Rumored to have their eyes on other parcels.

You don’t have to dig for this stuff…just scratch. And that maybe the ultimate insult here. The fact that these “shennigans” have operated in such a “forgiving” environment!! That all these deals were/are common business practices!!

Put theses bastard under oath….and include MG’s bosses and their bosses until we get to the top- Earl Ray “Just A Heart Beat Away” Tomblin!!

I can’t sign “sincerely”…but I can do: “Pissed As Hell”

  103. NO accountability Says:

Garrison is only a symptom of the larger problem. Because Garrison lobbied for WV Media holdings Co. keep in mind they are in Manchins pocket too and it is a deeply involved conspiracy keeping the story about Garrison only – and not the inbred corruption of our government officials. We have to rely on the PPG and HK to report the news, the truth and the rest of the story, in WV the media is owned by the same people who gave us Garrison to begin with.

It is all about the money, the family ties to corrupt influence in WV politics and it is about keeping health care cost high to profit the drug and insurance industries, to keep them rich at the expense of the many.

Why do you think Manchin gutted the drug company disclosue proposal? Why do you think Manchin refuses to disclose how much Mylan paid for a table at the Goverenors Party Tent? This story geos righty to the rrot of the lack of affordable health care in America and these are the crooked people who make it happen.

The election is the last chance we have to restore accountability and integrity in WV – and even the election process is chock full of funny money and therefore suspect.

Demand financial disclosure of all funds given to Government, including the the McMansion party tent, disclosure of all drug company gifts to Doctors, hospitals and pharmacists, demand public financiing of elections to end this special interest corruption of our government.

  104. Lurking In The Grass Says:

MG is a liability to those that want to “do business”. He is bringing calls for transparency and that doesn’t sit well with most players in this incestous affair. And we get mad at Cheney for making a joke about ir when we tolerate this crap ! Hell, maybe we deserve the ridicule!

Manchin has got to let MG go by Friday. If he is going to support the candidate of Change, he has to Change!! When he was supporting Clinton, her baggage evened out Manchin’s baggage. It’s a different set of rules on Friday Joe!!
    The new Boss wants Change!!

  105. mteerfish Says:

These guys could take the high road and fall on their swords. what will this leadership do with a crisis that is not of their own making? thank God they were not in power during the Revolution or the Civil War. Brings to mind the fall of Rome.

I remain astounded at the deafening silence from the College of Law and the WV Bar in regard to the pervasive conflicts of interest, falsification of offical records and lack of remorse shown by the attorneys charged with responsibility for this mess. Falsification of legal records…heads should and would roll in any other circumstance.

  106. observer Says:

    mteerfish @ 8:42
Ditto on the CoL and the bar – but I think the fact that the Goodwins have given money for at least one endowed professorship (the incoming dean) at the CoL and presumably other money, the CoL’s silence can be explained by an attempt not to piss off major donors/potential major donors. Sad. . . This place is even more inbred in terms of connections than I thought. My own prediction is that the new dean will use this position as a stepping stone to another deanship job, as did so many other CoL deans.

  107. Anonymous Says:

I agree, observer. I will say there are a number of us that were disappointed in her selection as Dean and in the direction the COL has been going for quite some time. However many attorneys in my area are highly respectful of Dean Fisher and are dismayed.

  108. observer Says:

Anonymous, I always had a lot of respect for Dean Fisher, and I like JM , who has very good political and people skills, even though I don’t consider her a major legal scholar. Faculty with scholarly ambitions leave WVU CoL. I think she was the obvious choice — how could they have picked a dean with credentials much better than those of the university president?
I began to wonder about JF when I found out his daughter was Hardesty’s chief of staff (even though at least she went through the effort of getting her PhD at WVU). The powers-that-be have now borrowed his prestige to shore up MG — he could have refused, he is retiring, personally he has nothing to lose, but he may have been thinking of potential donations. I think he is very loyal to WVU and W. Va., and he may have thought that since politically MG was here to stay, he might at least try to prevent more damage.
One CoL faculty member signed the pro-Garrison petition (and his son applied for a CoL job, but was not hired due to other faculty’s concerns about nepotism).

  109. Paul Brown Says:

By the way, with all this incest, has anyone checked Garrison and the BOG for extra fingers, webs between the toes? We certainly know Garrison’s intelligence is sub-par. Can any of them play the banjo really, really fast?

  110. Mteerfish Says:

Good point observer, how can Garrison hire anyone with more credentials than his?
I appreciate your comments about Dean Fisher. Many local attorneys in myarea can not understand why he is doing this. I do not personnally know his daughter, I do know indiviuals who think highly or her. Sometimes good people are caught in bad places.

I can not understand how any attorney can sit in a meeting and agree to create a false record and not come under serious scrutiny from the bar and the COL. What message does that send to the public and the students of law attorneys?

  111. Mteerfish Says:

    and attorneys. :(

  112. observer Says:

Also, the Dean started his career with Morgantown attorney George Farmer. Someone here posted that the Farmer who is on the BoG and Huggie’s agent is the son of the dean’s first employer. (Makes sense, because Huggie apparently attended MHS for a while.)
I thought that incoming dean JM might not be selected because her husband has sued WVUF and WVU on behalf of construction trades unions. (Stories in DP, he has a different last name.) I was glad a woman was chosen, at least. She does have a LLM, and she does research.
I am looking for the law faculty letter — I am so glad they wrote it. My guess is that the link it will be in tomorrow’s Gazette.
Finally, Mteerfish, I don’t think you can make a bar complaint on basis of hearsay. I wouldn’t. Many members of W. Va. public think at least some attorneys are dishonest. This is not hearsay, I have heard the comments first hand. Sad. I agree with your sentiment, though.

  113. Molly's Mom Says:

So where is the Dean’s voice this week? I think she is a disappointment and is setting a bad example for students and practicing lawyers. WV deserves better. We had better candidates for her job, and unless she steps up to the plate fast, I’ll be sorry we opted for her.

  114. observer Says:

Quote from the article posted by Steph on the most recent thread: CoL faculty “Gerald Ashdown, Robert Bastress, Charles DiSalvo, James Elkins, James Friedberg, Robert Lathrop, Patrick McGinley, James McLaughlin, Dale Olson, Judith Scully and Valorie Vojdik signed the letter.”

  115. Mteerfish Says:

I agree there is no basis for a formal complaint without first hand knowlege. I am only suggesting that some portion of the legal profession could be expressing deep concern over the chain of events. I think members of the public believe many lawyers are dishonest or at a minimum on the edge of being so. That is understandable in light of recent events concerning both the judiciary and the number of lawyers in this mess. We don’t enjoy good public opinion anyway. As a lawyer myself, I sometimes don’t put faith in the profession. However, there are times when the entities that represent us need to assure the public that situations such as this are not condoned.

  116. observer Says:

At least two prominent attorneys expressed their dismay — Peter Kalis in PA, and then Ricklin Brown in WV. The CoL faculty have now added their voice. Better late than never — I think many people did not want to jump to conclusions. The W. Va. bar publication is usually out of date by the time it comes out.

  117. Mteerfish Says:

thanks observer, i have followed the news articles. I am glad the COL has taken a position. I hope Mr. Garrison accepts their advice.
Certainly at this point he must realize that that he has become a liability to those whose interests he serves.
If the bar chooses to stick its head in the sand on this, so be it. I hope that is not the case.

  118. nick Says:

God what a mess….and there is amazement when people like Dick cheney ridicule WV. The ONLY solution is Garrison resigning or being removed, and Manchin being run out of office. Obviously Garrison not only looks inept, but is inept. I see used car sales in his future. As for Bresch, at most corporations what she did would be seen as falsifying your resume, and she would be terminated immediately. Share holders at Mylan should also be outraged.
