Last week, Mike Garrison told the Gazette’s editors that he assumed the average pay for a tenured WVU professor was $100,000. “I would assume that the average may be at a hundred - but I don’t know.”
Mikey doesn’t know.
Seriously, people — could this man be any more out of touch with the men and women he is supposed to lead?
Even now, I’m having a hard time getting over the extent to which Garrison really doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing. The man has been utterly and totally at sea throughout this entire scandal. Case in point: even if you don’t fully understand how the magical world of tenure works (I don’t — but then again, it’s not my JOB to), and even if you don’t know what the average tenured WVU professor makes — YOU DON’T ADMIT THAT!!!
2 things: 1 — remember back in the day, when Garrison apologists were insisting that “no, you don’t need an academic to run a modern university?” Well, I think we’ve seen a couple instances in which that sort of knowledge would have come in REAL fucking handy for him.
And 2 — even if the WVU Board of Governors wanted to hire some sort of crackerjack business-minded fund raiser — THIS WASN’T THE FUCKING GUY. He’s a goddamn hack lobbyist who’s managed to amble into a difficult, vastly important, quarter-million dollar a year job just because he made friends with the right people when he was a teenager.
This Wednesday, let him know that his services will no longer be needed.

Hey, but he bought a lot of swell ties with WVU colors.
May 11, 2008 at 5:51 pm
The average salary for an associate professor … $68K … the average salary for a full professor … $92K or at least that’s what the HEPC says. Both groups tenured. Weighted average … $82K.
Garrison only missed the average by about 20% - about the same as the percent of faculty who have confidence in him. Seems about right to me.
May 11, 2008 at 5:55 pm
And still, that depends which part of the university they work for. And like most of state government, it’s a winner-take-all system. When you take the salaries of the handful of “winners” like Lang, Sears, and Bailes, average pay drops really fast.
Most of the professors I had 10 years ago now make around 50 to 60K a year. I’m not saying they don’t have good jobs, but that’s a long way off from the 6 figures plus that Garrison and his cronies are taking home.
May 11, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Being a little more serious, this is a guy who has made a big deal out of “the biggest raise since 1993″ and talking about a big raise this year, yet he doesn’t have a clue as to average salary? He should know precisely what is is and where we stand relative to our lowest peers. This shows that it has all been “talking points”, things to make the peasants happy while he sets things up for his “friends” to pillage the university.
May 11, 2008 at 6:02 pm
If there’s one thing about which we all should be thankful it’s that Mike Garrison did not understand tenure when he was hired. It is common from university presidents like Garrison to be given tenure, which means Garrison could have gotten the sweetheart lifetime deal that Lang and Sears received. Now the only choice is to throw Garrison’s sorry ass out on the curb.
May 11, 2008 at 6:04 pm
Damn.
That’s a good point.
May 11, 2008 at 6:07 pm
What happens on Wednesday?
May 11, 2008 at 6:15 pm
The faculty vote overwhelming no confidence in Mike Garrison and he continues as President because Steve Goodwin and rest of the Board of Governors don’t care.
May 11, 2008 at 6:22 pm
“Seriously, people — could this man be any more out of touch with the men and women he is supposed to lead?”
Anyone remember Potomac State, Parkersburg and Tech ? Having over 10% (maybe as high as 20% ) of the WVU enrollment, where do they fit in ? They are represented in the Faculty Senate and have received the same blanket invitation to the upcoming Faculty Assembly. No allowances have been made for the travel distances involved to facilitate their participation. What’s their take on all of this? Garrison is president on those campuses as well.
The $100K sounds inviting - the average pay off campus is considerably lower than the “Weighted average … $82K.” Of course, they simply teach for a living.
May 11, 2008 at 6:59 pm
HK, Garrison knows about tenure for presidents - he is not an academic, therefore, teaching, after being president, wouldn’t interest him.
Guys, don’t forget: He was planning on running for Governor or Senator by then. He wasn’t going to stick around WVU long enough.
This explains why he doesn’t give a fuck what the faculty senate says or does……………..he didn’t plan on staying too long.
But, alas, there has been a bit of a wrinkle put in his plans.
May 11, 2008 at 7:02 pm
High elected office was his dream job. But now with Heathergate, this will be the best gig he has ever had, and he will not give it up and fade SILENTLY into the night without a payoff.
May 11, 2008 at 7:04 pm
Which former WVU president, who is not an academic either, and who has worked as a lobbyist also, now has a tenured teaching position at the College of Law? As far as I am aware, he has not written any books — maybe he’s working on them.
May 11, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Here is an interesting connection: Big Mike Garrison and WV Supreme Court Chief Justice “Spike” Maynard.
Mikey pushed David Hardesty out of the WVU president’s office early so he could get
Control and push the assigned agenda. Instead of leaving the WVU presidency in late September, 2007, Hardesty agreed that his last day in office would be August 31 and Mikey would take over the next day.
Garrison just couldn’t wait. He invited Puskar, and Goodwin and many others to a cocktail party at Blaney House (the WVU President’s house) that started at 10 p.m.
The liquor flowed freely and at the stroke of midnight, Mike Garrison was sworn in as WVU’s new President — by Elliott “Spike” Maynard.
May 11, 2008 at 8:03 pm
“Always Watching, ”—- thanks for making a connection between Garrison and Spike Maynard.
There are other interesting and important connections between the two.
A “Spike and Mike” show theme is carrying on secret, clandestine communications and then stonewalling media requests for public records of those communications.
Spike and Mike have e-mail and cell phone issues; and, both have been the target of media FOIA lawsuits trying to get them to disclose secret communications that they have denied.
Tomorrow the Kanawha County Circuit Court Judge “Duke” Bloom will hear an important Freedom of Information Act (“FOIA”) case relating to the scandal involving WV Supreme Court Chief Justice Spike Maynard and his “long-time friend” Massey CEO Don Blankenship.
In mid-January, after photos surfaced of Maynard and Blankenship drinking champagne in the French gambling resort of Monte Carlo, the Associated Press asked Maynard to hand over all e-mail and phone communication records that show contacts between Spike and/or Spike’s law clerks and girl friend — and Blankenship and/or Massey representatives.
The AP lawsuit is asking Judge Bloom to order Supreme Court Administrator Steven Canterbury to release these records after Canterbury refused to disclose them in January, claiming the state Freedom of Information Act is unconstitutional.
Canterbury issued a press release last week just an hour after the AP’s suit was filed.
Canterbury’s announcement said that the taxpayers were going to pick up the tab for four lawyers from three different law firms to try to keep Maynard’s contacts with Blankenship secret.
http://www.state.wv.us/wvsca/press/april30_08.htm
Maynard and Canterbury are trying to keep voters in Tuesday’s primary election for the Supreme Court from knowing about Maynard/Blankenship’s secret communications that occurred while Blankenship’s Massey Coal Company had a $70,000,000 case pending before the Court.
Maynard’s vote provided the deciding vote that allowed Blankenship and Massey to escape the $70 million jury verdict based on Massey defrauding anther coal company.
Ten days ago Maynard was questioned by the Bluefield Telegraph editorial board and he said he would “probably” turn over the e-mails to the AP —after the other four Supreme Court candidates, Republican and Democrat, agreed that e-mails from a Judge and a CEO of a party to a case must be handed over upon an FOIA request.
http://www.bdtonline.com/local/local_story_122214935.html
In his press release on May 1, Canterbury’s press release said:
“I also want to announce today that Robert P. Fitzsimmons and Robert J. Fitzsimmons of Fitzsimmons Law Offices, Daniel J. Guida of Guida Law Offices, and Bill Wilmouth and Ancil Ramey of the law firm of Steptoe and Johnson have been selected to protect these important interests of the judiciary. Please direct any questions to them.”
Interestingly, the Fitzsimmons and members of their families contributed more than $6000 to Maynard’s re-election campaign prior to being hired and Guida and a relative contributed more than $1000.
Steptoe and Johnson, the firm of Ramey and Wilmouth have contributed more than $9000 to Maynard’s Supreme Court race coffers.
http://www.wvsos.com/elections/PDF/Candidates/005963220.pdf
http://www.wvsos.com/elections/PDF/Candidates/006008290.pdf
Why in the world would Maynard and Canterbury hire a pack of lawyers to try to keep his e-mails with Blankenship secret — after Maynard told the Bluefield newspaper that he would “probably” fork them over to the AP?
Each law firm the hired to keep Maynard’s contacts with Blankenship secret — is a big money contributor to Maynard’s Supreme Court campaign — why is that?
How much will the taxpayers have to pay these Maynard-backers for trying to conceal Maynard’s secret contacts with Massey?
How much time will these law firms have to spend on Maynard’s case before they have recouped the money they gave his campaign?
And, there is another bizarre aspect of Maynard’s Court hiring these lawyers -
– One of them was the Blankenship/Massey lawyer in the very case that is involved in the scandal -
— Steptoe lawyer Ancil Ramey represented Massey in the Hugh Caperton case in Boone County Circuit Court.
Ramey made an impassioned plea for Massey, but the jury didn’t buy it and Ramey lost the case.
The jury found Massey had defrauded Caperton’s coal company of $50,000,000 (now with interest — $70,000,000).
Then. Massey appealed the case to the West Virginia Supreme Court. Massey clinked champagne glasses with Blankenship in Monte Carlo and later voted to overturn the jury verdict that Ramey lost in Boone County.
Now, taxpayers are paying Massey lawyer and Maynard contributor Ancil Ramey to conceal secret communications the Chief Justice had with Blankenship and Massey while the Hugh Caperton case was before the Supreme Court.
What is wrong with this picture? Is anyone outraged or do Maynard and his trial lawyer friends get another free pass?
Judge Bloom could order Maynard to immediately disclose the e-mails he exchanged with Don and Massey.
If that happens and the voters may get important information on election day:
— Maynard will either be shown to have had no improper contacts with Blankenship and/or Massey
— or, his e-mails will show that Maynard had a corrupt relationship with coal company and Blankenship.
In either case, the information is crucial to voters.
What will Judge Bloom do tomorrow? Will he order Maynard’s record’s disclosed to the Associated press in time for voters to know before voting on tuesday — whether or not Maynard is hiding unethical contacts with Massey?
May 11, 2008 at 8:23 pm
I heard, someone may be able to confirm it, that Garrison, when hired requested tenure at the Law School.
The faculty at the Law school raised hell about it, and he backed off.
He wanted the same deal as Hardesty, who when he became prez, got that deal written into the contract. Garrison wanted the same thing, and the law school faculty put the kibosh on it.
May 11, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Bobby, in going to one of the campaign contribution forms you linked to your message, I found another interesting connection. Maynard’s campaign treasurer is WVU Board of Governor’s member Ellen S. Cappellanti.
May 11, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Wow
After reading Bobby Flanagan’s post I say again…why hasnt someone from outside of WVa stepped in and done something?
In Michigan we have corruption as well…The Detroit mayor being a present example.
However folks move to deal with this type of nonsense. It isnt left unchecked.
If what Bobby says about the 70M lawsuit being bribbed away is true, it just seems the FBI or someone would get in on this stuff.
If WVa is truly as crooked as what I have been reading in this blog, I feel sorry for the folks living there. I knew the Good Ole Boy network kept family/friends in jobs…but never imagined it was this bad :(
May 11, 2008 at 8:52 pm
Great job Bobby.
Also he forgot to mention that Hugh Caperton gave a hand job or blow job to Larry Starcher. According to Starcher I think Hugh Caperton suck a mean cock!
Bobby, won’t you run and tell Tom Searls and Larry Messina that shit. They wouldn’t print it anyway.
May 11, 2008 at 8:53 pm
how how would MG know the average tenured professor’s salary is under $100,000 when his friends are Bailes and the highest paid folks on campus that signed the Bailes letter. He probably thought everyone made over $500,000. Shameful. Just shameful.
May 11, 2008 at 9:26 pm
To those speculating about salaries…There is CONSIDERABLE variation by discipline. 100K is twice what I make! If you want to look at averages, you have to look within disciplines, not just within colleges, at least on the downtown campus. When you look at those numbers, we are below our “peer” institutions, at least in my discipline.
May 11, 2008 at 9:31 pm
“Veritas odit moras”: truth hates delay.
May 11, 2008 at 9:37 pm
there are differences in salaries between specialties and disciplines at the HSC too. Most faculty make less than the national mean, well except the chair of neurosurgery. Does anyone know what the national average for those guys would be ?
May 11, 2008 at 9:51 pm
I wonder how “Clueless” MG would be if a bunch of MBA’s sued the sh!t out of WVU……
May 11, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Hippie:
Enjoy your comments and firm attacks. Keep it up! Here is another fiasco that Garrison helped create that has allowed for privileged members of the “good old boys” to pilfer the coffers of the State tax payers. Start talking about this and watch your writers go ape shit! I am talking about the Brickstreet Workers Comp Insurance group. The same cronies that helped run the state workers comp system into the ground were rewarded by the Wise Administration at the direction of Garrison by converting the State of West Virginia’s “public” Workers Compensation system to a “private” for profit system in which the Goodwin-Garrison and other members of the scum bag WV Democratic machine established a for profit company called Brickstreet which produced a $58,000,000 profit last year. Greg Burton is the President and was formerly put in charge of the Workers Comp Administration while at the state by Garrison, Democrat State Chair Steve White and his co-chair Chuck Smith. Steve White (formerly of the Goodwin firm) was placed on the board and will undoubtedly profit when the company goes public which will more than likely happen in the near future. Once that happens, it will certainly begin to pay exorbitant salaries and directors fees. Chuck Smith’s firm had no experience performing Workers Comp audits, actually had little experience at doing any kind of auditing until his ass kissing buddy (no pun intended!) Gaston Caperton became Governor. When that happened, Chuck started getting all kinds of work. And it carried over into the Wise Administration where by pure miracle his company was awarded the exclusive contract to perform Brickstreet’s audits. His firm conducts hundreds of thousands of these audits a year and has been paid tens of millions of dollars. The law was arranged to create the biggest boondoggle the State has ever known. All conceived while Garrison was chief of staff.

I think the issues are pretty simple. 2+2=4. Simple.
The damage is done. Damage control is in full spin.
Now what happens?
Garrison is surviving. Shit.
Will Heather ever get on the Foundation Board or the BoG? Never.
Will Garrison ever run for Gov? Nah. Would he potentially get appointed to some high office by Manchin? No way. I mean, wouldn’t that look like a Manchin payoff?
Do the Manchin’s care what people think, or do they believe that the average WVian cares.
Money is something the average WVian’s care about.
HK, do a piece on money. Garrisons money:
How much does Garrison make a year? Be careful, some may come from the Foundation as well.
Does he sit on the Mylan Board? Some other group or organization he can get some side deals on?
Does Garrison get a State Car? What is it?
Does Garrison pay rent to live in the Presidents house? If not, how many sq ft is it? What would comp rental rate be in Mgtwn?
Does he get use of a plane? Does WVU have a fractional deal on an aircraft? Do they charter planes?
Does Garrison get paid leave, travel to far away conferences in Asia, Europe, or The Greenbrier?
I think if the Average West Virginian only knew that his salary plus benefits was extraordinary, then they would be outraged about his situation. “If this man makes XXX,XXX and gets Y and Z, then what the hell is he thinking? Don’t we pay him enough to NOT make decisions that are STUPID.”
Everyone knows that this was a pure Manchin pick. Everyone knows that Manchin is not only in charge of the Whole State, but he has to be in charge of WVU as well. Not only from picking the President, but the Basketball Coach, the Football Coach, the BoG president, and the WVU Foundation as well.
When did the Governors office become NOT ENOUGH POWER. Geesh.
May 12, 2008 at 6:58 am
i am telling you folks, while i find what Garrison and thugs do reprehensible, keep him and elect him as Senator…………..he’ll throw you all a pork bone ($) which is the only way the State of WV is going to get anything from the federal government………of course, there will be a little for him on the side……….figure it out, ALL THE TALK IS GOING TO GO NOWHERE……..eiher for the University or HSC………….it’s either get on board or get out………..
May 12, 2008 at 7:31 am
He can keep his “pork bone.”
Garrison has “boned” this state enough, thank you.
May 12, 2008 at 8:31 am
Everything WV “gets” from the federal government we paid for ourselves and it all comes with strings attached (along with Robert C. Byrd’s name prominently displayed). No thanks, I’d prefer more freedom from the federal government and less pork (and especially less Manchin/Garrison shenanigans, if at all possible!).
May 12, 2008 at 8:35 am
BEST PICTURE YET!
May 12, 2008 at 9:10 am
Bing - you are close to correct on Garrison & tenure. Informal inquiries were made and the law school faculty informally said no way. Garrison never actually asked for tenure.
Hardesty has it, and now teaches at the law school. They gave him the worst office in the building. It was the former supply closet for the CLE program.

Microman–
Each year the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) publishes the mean and median salaries of faculty at medical schools. The statistical abstracts are broken into several categories (e.g., PhD, MD, region of country, level of appointment, discipline, etc.). HSC policy is to hire incoming faculty at 75%-90% of the peer-median salary, although they often do not meet that stated aim, particularly for PhD types who do the bulk of the research and who now have contractual obligations to offset their salaries by a certain percentage with external grant funds. To compensate for not being able to meet the median income, HSC offers an “incentive” plan—however, for details too long and complicated to go into here, I can tell you that it definitely does not work for many of us, and we remain much below the university’s stated aim. Because salaries for clinical faculty include both UHA and HSC components, their pay is closer to their peers. Research faculty, however, lag behind. The annual AAMC publication, albeit one year behind, is available in the HSC library, located in the reference section next to the front desk. One last thing—faculty in the HSC have 12 month contracts, while most of the liberal arts and sciences faculty have 9 month contracts. A few more caveats—the goal for WVU overall (excluding the med school) is to meet 90% of the median salary for peer institutions. For both, peer institutions refer to institutions located in the South.
May 12, 2008 at 9:40 am
salary for neurosurgeon at WVU 200,000-400,000 with the exception of Bailes 1,500,000
May 12, 2008 at 9:46 am
at 150,000 a pop you could hire TEN internal med/peds/family med docs for that - so much for why HSC is understaffed

There stands a hundred-sixty years
Of arrogance. The boss’ lip
Is curled, his eye untouched by tears
No widow’s cry weakens his grip.
We have not moved him yet.
Your forebears’ flesh was crushed for gold
Their backs were bent and ruined, still
The Coal Ghouls rule, just as of old
And we are weak of power - and will.
We have not moved him yet.
These Mammon-crows will not relent.
They own the courts, the laws, the guns.
And our impotent fury’s spent
In tip-tap-typing orisons.
We have not moved him yet.
Now what could cure recursive shame?
And who or what could send us light
To show, and end this bloody game
Of thrones of blood - and anthracite?
We have not moved him yet.
I fear the reckoning to come.
So many robbed, and slain, and torn
From all good things, from hope and home.
What “beauty” from dark mountains born?
We have not moved him yet.

did anyone get an email from an officer at Centrabank asking them to sign petition to keep MG ? I hear there is one going around. Bailes in on their board of directors. For those of you who bank there, it might be time to move your money !
May 12, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Most of the faculty at hsc will not be able to vote with the “no proxy votes” permitted at Wednesday’s faculty senate meeting. Most will be seeing patients–sounds like we’re being railroaded…

The National Capital Area Chapter of the WVU Alumni Association is hosting the State of the University Address in Washington, DC on Monday, June 16, 2008. This is my reply to the organizers:
Holly,
I have been a frequent supporter of these events in the past but my conscious will not allow me to attend this event as long as Mike Garrison remains President of WVU. His comments and actions over the past several months have clearly shown to me he places his personal interests above those of the university. It will take the university and the state over 10 years to recover from the damage he has done.
I wish you the best with this event. But, as long as Mike Garrison remains president, I can not support any function that he attends.
All the best,
David Mitchell

it would be nice if someone would paste the body of the Centrabank email here.
Aren’t Puskar and Petropolis also on their BOD?
May 12, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Doug Leech, the centra prez, is on the WVU Bd of Governors, I think.
May 12, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Doug Leech was on the BOG but is no more. I hear he got pushed off because he didn’t support the removal of Hardesty earlier than he was willing to go.
May 12, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Doug Leech…….know him well from when i was “there”,yet another honest man gone…….
May 12, 2008 at 2:23 pm
you should be figuring this out by now, “get on board or get out”………
May 12, 2008 at 2:27 pm
What’s with that, Nathan? It hardly seems fair to bar people from voting if they’re on campus but committed to work responsibilities.

Leech and Bailes were both also on the search committee for Garrison. Leech was on the BOG and was chairman, but his term ended.
Parry P. is currently on the BOG.

Supreme Court Justice Spike Maynard’s e-mail records won’t be turned over to The Associated Press a day before West Virginia’s primary election after all.
Kanawha Circuit Judge Duke Bloom today said there were two issues that would need to be addressed first.
One was whether the judge was ethically able to proceed over the issue because the Supreme Court is responsible for his salary. Neither side objected to his overseeing this issue.
The second was whether the circuit court actually has the jurisdiction to order the Supreme Court to act.

Joe P,
here is a copy of the email from the centra bank officer:
We the undersigned strongly urge the WVU Board of Governors to continue to support President Mike Garrison. We believe the investigative panel report speaks for itself and we support the panel’s report and findings. We support and trust President Garrison to lead us through this and to lead our University into the future. In just six months since his inauguration President Garrison has made great progress in so many areas of our institution and we support him now and in the future.

What part of Walker being Garrison’s surrogate (as his Chief of Staff) do these (supposedly intelligent) people not understand that they can write letters of support for Garrison? Walker participated in the meetings where decisions about the degree were made. Was he not representing Garrison at these meetings? And if not, and Walker was acting on his own, what are his parameters of authority and where is Garrison’s control?
May 12, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Garrison addressed the faculty senate today. He appeared to be begging for his job. The senate was somber and asked no questions, so at conclusion, he left the room. He is nearing resignation.
May 12, 2008 at 6:51 pm
deepthroat what makes you think garrison is going to resign? pressure from faculty? pressure from governing board? pressure from donors? sold out by governor? the sudden discovery of a conscience? just curious.
May 12, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Garrison resigning by Friday would be a huge relief to all the grads, families, and faculty (the whole world in general!) who deserve to celebrate what they rightfully earned. The public planning to attend have grave concerns about the environment and security. Large places filled with people are not pleasant to contemplate under these circumstances. The faculty also needs legislative alliance to enact change in the law to create the BOG we really need for the future, else this will just repeat itself. We also need to know the nature of the students and/or faculty silent protest if no resignation takes place, in order to support the cause.

You all probably know this already, but I’m pretty sure Bernie Westfall on the Centra Board of Directors was the administrator of Ruby Hospital for many years. Don’t know if he’s connected to Bailes, but wouldn’t be surprised.

Deep throat: did the PPG launch the legal investigation ? I can not imagine anyone else brave enough to do it.
May 12, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Interesting article — good piece and excellent questions.
May 12, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Newspapers don’t launch investigations, governments do. And I’m hardly the only person who has long wondered where the hell the United States Attorney’s office has been throughout all of this.
May 12, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Right, HK. It’s especially strange considering how the USAs under Bush have so aggressively investigated Democrats.
May 12, 2008 at 8:31 pm
deep throat i have been … will be watching very carefully. if someone has information to provide for a legal investigation, where might one go?
May 12, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Personally, I’ll believe Garrison’s resignation when I see it.
And if he does resign, so what? The problem is the fucking BOARD that installed Garrison in the first place. The don’t give a shit about WVU, its reputation, its future, or its graduates. All they care about are advancing political goals of their own.
The hydra has many heads.

I have heard that the investigation at PPG started becuz pittsburghers hated the CEO at Mylan and wanted him ran out of town. Also that CEO and Heather were having affair.
May 12, 2008 at 9:00 pm
More shoes may drop. Heard tip to PPG about degree was an “inside” job.
May 12, 2008 at 9:17 pm
If Heather was banging Mylan Puskar she deserves to be the CEO of Mylan.
In fact, if that is the case she deserves to be CEO, COO, CIO, Chairman of the Board, and President.
There is no way she was having an affair with Mike Puskar.
Although, if she is anything like her father she can probably suck a mean cock to get what she wants.
May 12, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Maybe she was letting Mike Garrison tap that tail.
Honestly, that would be the best move for Mike. Divorce his current wife and marry MoJo’s daughter. That is the fast track to elected office baby.
Although, I hear that Mike’s current woman has some big o’l (o)(o).
May 12, 2008 at 9:23 pm
not Puskar … Coury.
May 12, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Doug Leech is a strong supporter of Garrison. He was involved in getting him his position. Bailes is a good friend of Leech and introduced him to his current wife. Leech is also a frequent patron of “Chicken Bones” , a Motown bar. Chip Malone is one of the owners and father of Heather Garrison. Paul Malone (centra bod) is not related to Heather Garrison. Leech just received a $760,000 year end bonus which is another reason to take your money out of the bank!

No doubt they are gearing up for a rear assault - part of it is not allowing for a proxy vote - you must attend to vote - there goes most if not all faculty from the hsc
May 12, 2008 at 9:41 pm
to just curious and others - the way to have this investigated properly would be through the feds. There’s just probably not enough interest with homeland defense and isn’t it rather ironic that we can’t even defend our homeland - the feds could put pressure on the attorney general’s office or simply investigate on their own, one would think. And remember, any demonstrations must be done rationally and in good taste, else we’ve lost any ground we have won in having this president resign from office and hopefully, the restructuring of the BOG.
May 12, 2008 at 9:42 pm
“Rear assault.” Ouch.
May 12, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Action by the WV attorney general is not a viable option in this case. McGraw has limited powers, and he is already trying to pacify Manchin to protect his own hide.

So Hippie Killer and some other WV blogger are mentioned in this week’s UK Guardian column by state native Michael Tomasky (from Morgantown, his late dad was a powerhouse attorney and self-made man there in the old days).
Michael is a nationally recognized writer, liberal political critic and comtemporary socail commentator/historian in several respected magazines, including New York Magazine, The New York Review of Books, The American Prospect).
Michael’s also an extremely respected author (several books, all published by elite imprints and overall extremely well-reviewed by major critics).

The tragic thing, I must suppose
That none can tell, and no one knows
That I teatotally abstain.
This stuff comes from a sober brain.
I wish I could claim Learyness
But this is naught but weariness
And clumsy added levity
To these ongoing tragedies.

MARTIN–
Who from Centra Bank sent that email message about supporting MG? I’ll pull my $ out of there immedately if it came from a bank officer!
Do you know the author?
PS- I already checked, the officers at BB & T bank also have Board Of Governors connections. If anyone can recommend a local bank with no such ties, I’d like to know about it.

Where are Garrison’s phone records from his office that still have not been produced?
Where are Garrison’s e-mails records that are missing that he and Macia are refusing to produce?
Why has no one been held accountable for this withholding of information?
Isn’t this against the law?
What are they trying to hide?
How corrupt are they?
May 13, 2008 at 12:06 am
I believe the phone records came out last week. They’re online somewhere.
May 13, 2008 at 1:03 am
Why would the Feds or any other criminal investigatory body review this mess? What WVU did was dumb and highly detrimental to the University, but there has yet to be any indication of a crime. There was a link earlier on this blog to a Harvey Peyton op-ed piece suggesting that in his legal opinion Sears and Lange are not public officials and, thus, did not violate any laws falsifying the records.
HK why not a thread on Heather Bresch being morally obligated to pay the $31,000 this investigation cost the WVU Foundation. She started this mess by fabricating her degree and then calling Garrison’s office claiming she earned it. The $31,000 should go for scholarships for real students.

Look carefully at those published cell phone records. It is more smoke and mirrors

Reddyto puke - Clear Mountain Bank (former Bruceton Bank) is over 100 years old. It has no ties to the BOG.

More infor about the letter that came from CentraBank can be found here
May 13, 2008 at 9:12 am
WVU Anonymous - Garrison has suggested that she still believes she earned the degree. Remember she said she is not going to challenge the decision out of respect for her alma mater. And there have been no words of apology for putting WVU through this ordeal nor for the repercussions the university is suffering as a result.
May 13, 2008 at 10:31 am
Glad Peregrinous is back!
May 13, 2008 at 4:45 pm
>>>>>>>>>>Garrison has suggested that she still believes she earned the degree.
Gee, I believe I can flap my arms and fly to the moon, too!
Not really, but that’s just about as intelligent as Garrison’s comment.
May 13, 2008 at 10:24 pm
HK– you actually missed something here, so I feel it’s necessary to call you on it…. when the Manchin/Garrison cronies stated that you don’t need an academic to run the University, technically they are still correct, and he is still running WVU…. right into the ground….
May 14, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Interesting all this talk about whether the Feds should or shouldn’t investigate and/or if they even have a right. No expert here but from a layman’s perspective I would think Heather’s testimonies to congressional sub-committees regarding global pharmaceutical issues may be a trouble area for her as she would have testified under oath relative to her credentials (or lack thereof!). May evoke some SEC concerns also. More symbolic to me is the political cess pool we have in West Virginia as when you look at the process of having someone at the State level look into this you realize how entangled the politicians are. For instance, the local Prosecuting Attorney maintains she would be in conflict because her husband works at the University (I note she uses that line when it is convenient for her!). That being the case, the next step is for the Governor to select a Special Prosecutor. Well he might not think so, but reality is that he is in conflict. The next step would then be for the Supreme Court to select a Special Prosecutor. Well none of the members can because they have all received significant donations from Mylan officials. I assume the next step would be for the U.S. Attorney in the Northern District to jump in. I don’t think she would have any conflict, but there is the possibility as her Father was and on occasion still is a prominent fundraiser for political candidates and has on numerous occasions solicited donations from the Mylan crowd. My point is that “cess pool” might be an understatement!
