    This just in at http://wvutoday.wvu.edu/news/page/6424/

West Virginia University Provost Gerald Lang has issued the investigation charge to the panel of independent educators who are reviewing the records of WVU’s Executive MBA program.

Last Wednesday (Jan. 2), Lang announced the creation of a team of independent educators to investigate, audit and attest to the accuracy of WVU’s recent decision regarding a retroactively issued degree. He cited the public concerns regarding the issuance of an Executive MBA degree to a student where WVU had a discrepancy in the historical records as the reason for his request of an independent audit. After much research by the College of Business and Economics, WVU resolved the records discrepancy in favor of the student.

“In the academic environment of shared governance at WVU, it is important to note that faculty have a long history of review and evaluation of academic matters,” said Lang. “In particular, the curriculum of the university is designed, approved and monitored by the faculty of WVU. As such, the faculty review and approve course content, evaluate all syllabi, authorize all new programs, determine the appropriateness of the curriculum for each degree, certify students for graduation and assess programmatic compliance. Since the accuracy of a WVU degree is at issue, it is only right that WVU faculty investigate the matter at their own institution as they do for any other curricular issues. It is the faculty who know what to look for as they have a knowledge and history of administrative processes.”

Gotta love that rationalization. Oh, and “after much research” my arse.

    Lang’s press release says:

“Panel Member Selection Was Endorsed by WVU Faculty Senate Leadership”

But that’s misleading. The WVU Faculty Senate has not even met yet since this story broke, and hasn’t “endorsed” these 3 faculty members for this job. Perhaps he means the Faculty Senate Executive Committee, a meeting held in Garrison’s office conference room, with Lang, Garrison and several administrators present. Did the Executive Committee “endorse” the Lang process? Not even:

“Current Faculty Senate Chair and Member of the Board of Governors Steve Kite and Chair-elect Virginia Kleist recommended panel members to the Administration and thus fully endorsed the membership of this Panel.”

I wonder if Kite and Kleist want to go down with Lang on this one.

This is simply journalistic insubordination. Where has the Daily Athenaeum been? They have the time to report on the Fiesta Bowl but not on the story that cuts to the integrity of their existence. This has got to be the most talked about story in the history of WV and WVU that is NOT being reported. I am shocked that this has gone on this long. This is not a situation that requires panels and committtee’s. Why doesn’t common sense prevail? As I have said before the amount of time that passes is directly porporional to the shame Bresch brings to herself, her family, WVU, the State of WV and all the others caught up in this morass.

Does Hoppy or his station get any commercials from state government agencies? Any promise of campaign commercials from the upcoming election from MoJo - as Hoppy likes to call him? Follow the money.

I don’t think it’s so much about advertising revenue, but more about being a playa in WV and keeping the entree he’s built over the years by not discussing things like Heathergate until the bodies have hit the floor. If there’s undue pressure it’s coming from WVU not Charleston.

  7. bingmanch Says:

Metronews DOES run a lot of radio WV Lottery ads. Hoppy has been the most pathetic he’s ever been, on this issue. He won’t even MENTION it. Hell, he talked about freaking soft drink machines in schools today. Got the principal of Capital High School to call in, PLUS the Mayor of Charleston. Hell, they were talking about that issue 30 years ago. This is just mind boggling, that we live in a state, that is THIS pathetic. It’s like living in some real life 21st century Dickens novel or something.

  8. dubvee95 Says:

Left Shadow - the students aren’t on campus. The DA doesn’t publish until Monday. Normally, they don’t even update their website over Christmas and Thanksgiving break. Drive through Morgantown tomorrow - the faculty are just beginning to show up.

  9. roof roof Says:

whats mind boggling is that the people of WV has allowed the state govt to micro manage everything. there are far more important issuse facing WV than sodas & snickers in the schools. but the same people keep getting elected so i guess we’ll have to live with it

  10. Ray Says:

Hoppy has his head so far up the asses of WVU’s administration and athletic department that he hasn’t seen the light of day since he started workig for Metronews.
He depends on them for a big chunk of his income.

  11. Jay Says:

I agree, Ray, that’s why I think Morgantown has more to do with his silence on this than Charleston. In the niche Hoppy has carved out, this story is a lose-lose situation until a decision has been made.
